From July 13 through July 19, 2026, Snake Week invites people to discover the incredible diversity of snakes while challenging the myths that have surrounded them for generations. Anchored by World Snake Day on July 16, the week brings together conservation organizations, scientists, zoos, museums, herpetological societies, educators, and wildlife enthusiasts with one shared goal: helping people better understand and appreciate snakes.
Whether you are fascinated by reptiles, work in animal care, or simply want to learn more about the wildlife around you, Snake Week is an opportunity to replace fear with facts and celebrate the important role snakes play in healthy ecosystems.

Why Snake Week matters
Despite their ecological importance, snakes remain some of the world’s most misunderstood animals. Misconceptions often lead to unnecessary fear and the needless killing of harmless species, even though most snakes actively avoid human contact and provide valuable natural pest control.
Snake Week was created to encourage a more informed perspective. Throughout the week, organizations across the country host educational events, presentations, live demonstrations, conservation activities, and online discussions that highlight the science behind snake behavior, habitat conservation, and responsible human interactions.
Importantly, Snake Week also promotes high standards of animal welfare. Events associated with the campaign are expected to follow strict guidelines that prioritize both public safety and the wellbeing of the animals involved.
These principles include:
- No free handling of highly venomous snakes.
- No abuse or mistreatment of snakes.
- No live prey feeding demonstrations.
- Promoting peaceful coexistence with snakes.
- Highlighting the ecological benefits snakes provide.
- Sharing scientifically accurate information.

America’s remarkable snake diversity
The United States is home to one of the world’s most diverse collections of native snake species. Depending on how species and subspecies are classified, there are around 150 different snake species across the country, with distribution varying dramatically between regions.
The overwhelming majority of these snakes are non venomous and play an essential role in controlling rodent populations and maintaining balanced ecosystems.
Snake diversity changes considerably depending on geography. Texas is widely recognized as having the greatest variety of snake species, with approximately 68 species recorded, including the distinctive Texas coral snake. At the other end of the spectrum, states such as Alaska and Hawaii have no native snake populations, while northern states with cooler climates generally support far fewer species than the southern United States.
Other biodiversity hotspots include the Missouri River Basin and the southeastern United States. Alabama, for example, is home to around 49 snake species, including numerous watersnakes, copperheads, and cottonmouths.
Understanding venomous snakes
While the United States has more than 30 venomous snake species, serious incidents remain relatively uncommon.
Most native venomous snakes belong to the pit viper family, which includes rattlesnakes, copperheads, and cottonmouths. These snakes can be identified by their heat sensing facial pits, although the exact appearance varies between species.
The country’s other native venomous group belongs to the elapid family, represented by the brightly colored harlequin coral snake.
Each year, approximately 8,000 people in the United States are bitten by venomous snakes. Fortunately, advances in emergency medicine and the availability of effective antivenom mean that fatalities are exceptionally rare, averaging only five to six deaths nationwide each year.
The key message remains simple. If someone is bitten by a venomous snake, they should seek immediate medical attention. Prompt hospital treatment offers the best possible outcome, which is why Snake Week strongly promotes evidence based first aid and professional medical care.
Native wildlife and invasive challenges
Snake conservation is not only about protecting native species. It also involves managing invasive populations that threaten local ecosystems.
One of the best known examples is the Burmese python in the Florida Everglades. Originally introduced through the exotic pet trade, these large non native snakes have established breeding populations that now number in the tens of thousands.
Their presence has dramatically reduced populations of many native mammals and birds, making the Burmese python one of the most significant invasive wildlife challenges in North America.
This contrast highlights an important conservation message. Native snakes deserve protection because they are essential components of their ecosystems, while invasive species require careful management to preserve biodiversity.
Replacing fear with understanding
Most snakes have little interest in interacting with people. Given the opportunity, they will usually move away rather than defend themselves.
Learning to recognize local species, respecting wildlife from a safe distance, and avoiding unnecessary disturbance all contribute to safer encounters for both people and snakes.
Educational campaigns such as Snake Week help communities understand that snakes are not simply predators. They are valuable members of healthy ecosystems, helping control rodents and other prey species while serving as food for birds of prey, mammals, and other wildlife.
