From August 29th, 2025, President Trump is removing all de minimis tax exemptions. This means that all imports into the United States will be subject to import tax, regardless of the product’s value. Prior to this, tax was only something our veterinary clients had to worry about, if they were purchasing very high end ultrasound machines ($15,000+). Most of our clients never faced any taxes at all.

What This Means for You

These expanded import taxes apply across the board. Even machines listed on Amazon, all of which are manufactured in China, will be subject to both taxes and tariffs under the new rules. While you will not see these directly, it is likely to result in a price increase over time on these products.

ScanX’s promise is and will remain to be that we will cover any import tariffs charged on your ultrasound machine. Even though tariffs have been in place for many months, so far, none of our customers have been affected. The UK’s reciprocal trading with the USA means that imports from the United Kingdom have not been subjected to tariffs at the levels imposed on other countries, and perhaps relatively low value goods going to an individual buyer are not worth the time of customs officials, who are instead focusing on bulk imports from high tariff countries.

Tax, however, is a different problem, because this is charged by the US government upon its own citizens (as opposed to tariffs which are, in theory, imposed upon the importer). It might be that our customers remain unaffected; it might be that you receive a nominal tax bill (i.e. $20). For most customers, at current tax rates, we anticipate the actual tax bill to be around $35, but FedEx will normally charge a ‘handling fee’ for dealing with customs which could increase the total bill to around $55. Right now, though, this is all new territory and we simply do not know for sure.

To remove any uncertainty and avoid unexpected costs, if you’ve been considering buying an ultrasound scanner from us, we strongly recommend placing your order on or before August 21st if you are able to do so. This will allow time for delivery and customs clearance well before the August 29th deadline, helping you avoid unexpected additional costs and potential disruption. Given that this tax will be affecting every import into the US, we anticipate it slowing down deliveries as government staff adjust to the new, higher volume of work.
